Obstruction of emptiness

20.11.2017

Today in our blog we will talk about one of the most recognizable in the world surrealist artist Rene Magritte.
Renee was born in a small Belgian town in 1898. He studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels, but abandoned it without completing.
Until 1926, Magritte worked as an advertiser at a paper mill, which subsequently reflected on his work.
Neither during the first exhibition in 1927 in Brussels, nor at an exhibition in Paris in 1947, did not come to glory to Magritte. His work was very cold, so the artist began to feel depressed.
However, after the exhibitions held in London, Rome and New York, the glory nevertheless came to him.
According to Magritte himself, the purpose of his work was to make the viewer think. His paintings often resemble puzzles that can not be solved. René called his art not surrealism, but "magical realism." Nevertheless, the artist did not like, when in his works they search for a secret meaning and try to solve the riddle. Magritte said that his paintings should be simply considered.
The names of his paintings are a topic for a separate study. "The Glass Key", "Completion of the Impossible", "Human Destiny", "Obstacle to Emptiness", "Beautiful World", "Empire of Light". Look at yourself, how many in these names of poetry and mystery. In the names of the paintings there is no description of what the viewer sees on the canvas, but about what the artist wanted to put in the name, in each individual case one has only to guess.
Magritte explained that "the names are chosen in such a way that they do not allow to place my pictures in the usual area, where automatic thought will necessarily work to prevent anxiety."
Recall that on November 15, 2017, the picture of Magritte "Empire of Light" was sold at an auction in New York for $ 20.56 million.
