Blue marble

The installation of our beloved planet landed on 159 Ludlow Street in Manhattan, nestling between two skyscrapers. The project, signed by Chilean artist, designer and activist Sebastian Errazuriz, consists of a 6-meter LED screen that reproduces a live image of the Earth. The photos that we see on the screen were obtained through direct communication with a NASA satellite in orbit, capable of sending images to a computer to create a direct image from our Planet. This fascinating installation is capable of attracting attention not only by its spectacular nature, but also by the fact that it affects some deep threads of our ego.
As Errazuriz states: “Blue marble is a reminder of the fragility of existence. This puts our life in perspective, all over the world, prompting us to live life to the fullest, realizing that our time on this small and vulnerable planet is limited. ”
The aim of the project is to raise awareness of the expectations and desires of each person, reminding them of the time limit. Moreover, in a broader sense, Errazuriz wants humanity to realize our planet, which we often take for granted, neglecting it and not caring about it. The installation is also a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the first landing and the first walk on the moon. The name also resembles the photograph “Blue Marble” of the same name, made by Apollo 17 during his last lunar mission in 1972, thanks to which for the first time we managed to see the Earth “from the outside”.
