Today we meet with the work of the Italian artist Mark Grassi. Born in 1987, in Reggio Emilia (Italy). After finishing his studies in the field of accounting, he continued to work in this area, and only in 2006 decided to enter the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna in order to link his life with art.
In 2003, to hold his first solo exhibition in his hometown, in the halls of the Palace of the Heel bone.
His paintings are distinguished by vivid drawing of the smallest details and shake their photorealism. Every freckle, every pore on the skin, an eyelash or a strand of hair looks surprisingly believable on the canvas. The artist combines his hyper-realistic style with unreal patterns, thereby creating unique, beautiful, sometimes ghostly regions, balancing between hyper-realism and surrealism.
His characters are predominantly women, in traditional studio conditions, where each picture is perceived ambiguously.
To the viewer, his intricate pictures will seem like photographs, but the added very small elements bring in a hint of surrealism, where every detail has its own meaning.
“My goal is to awaken deep emotions, trying to make people more sensitive,” said Grassi. "I want to combine reality and surrealism, to study human thoughts and nature in a more personal way."
"In his works, classical antiquity becomes a source of inspiration for a fantastic painting, filled with pathos and impulses. He collects elements that liberate cruel gestures and magical atmosphere from the prison of classical painting, often extracted from episodes of the most extravagant and large poetic works.
Metamorphosis and allegories are the main focus of his artistic research, with the help of which he interprets human behavior, masters the material and adds the character of Western classical painting to oriental art, supporting the distinction between these two identities "
